He thinks he’s talking to conservatives, playing on their “thin blue line” sympathies. But like every other rank-and-file Democrat, he has failed to read the fucking room. The right-wing in America showed us on January 6th 2021 that their support of law enforcement is purely conditional, and will be revoked the minute they don’t get their way. And the Left? We always hated cops.

5 seasons. No more, no less. It gives the overarching story enough room to breathe and play out a solid three act structure with a wide middle. It needs to all be written and plotted out before anything gets filmed.

I agree with all the other people in this thread mentioning ‘In Time’. It had such a great premise, and I didn’t even hate the execution, but it was mediocre. It was like they went 50% of the way to a flawless execution and just said “fuck it, that’s good enough”. The concept has a lot of elements to explore, like classism, labor exploitation, human rights, even free will to a point… A movie just isn’t the right vehicle for that story. It needs to be a series. Done right, you could explore all that while having an overarching plotline, and still have your weekly subplots and B stories. That would give the story time to fully develop the romantic connection between the poor guy who comes into a bunch of time, and the rich girl who empathizes with him. That romance felt incredibly rushed in the movie, but you could build it up over a whole season in a show.

I also want to mention another movie that I’m not sure belongs here. It’s not a bad movie, nor do I think the execution was mediocre, but for the life of me I can’t figure out why it didn’t do better. That movie is called ‘Push’, with Chris Evans and Dakota Fanning. I just watched it again the other night, and I freaking love it. The concept isn’t that amazing or original, but the way they present it is great. There isn’t a ton of exposition or world-building. They kinda just drop you in and let you figure it out, and I really like that. Evans and Fanning have great onscreen chemistry, and Djimon Honsou is a perfect bad guy. This is another one where I think it would make a great series, even though I think the movie was done really well. It’s just kind of a perfect mid-budget sci-fi action movie, and we don’t seem to get those anymore.

I care so little about either one that it’s hard to say. I guess I’d go with the phone since I use it more often. I can always walk, ride a bike, or take public transit to go shopping. The next best thing for long distance communication is… Send a raven? Smoke signals? Yeah I’ll take the phone.

This isn’t a good example. These two images were 80 years apart, and the people running the company under Nazi rule are long dead. May as well be a different company at that point. A much better example is the exact same company in the exact same year putting Pride flags all over their socials in western countries, while refusing to put Pride flags on any of their non-western socials because they don’t want to offend the countries that gleefully imprison and execute LGBTQ+ people.

Remember, every time you talk about gun control, they hit the panic button over “teh registries” being used to infringe upon people’s rights. But a registry to track girls periods and a registry to track autistic people? Nothing to see there, move along.

I’m not so sure. Impoverished countries have the highest birth rates. I can imagine the logic of the wealthy 0.001% being “if we make the rest of the country as broke as Somalia, the birth rate will also be as high as Somalia.”

Coincidentally, it’s also the exact type of person conservatives want having kids. They make up the majority of prison labor, military fodder, and wage slaves.

It won’t even cover the cost of giving birth. This is some real “how much could a banana cost” energy.

Humiliating people that change their minds for the better is probably not the solution. But saying “no consequences, all is forgiven if we can move on” is how you get confederate general statues all over union soil.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I am perfectly willing to accept people who turn the page and abandon fascism, but there needs to be genuine contrition and a concerted effort on their part to set things right. Saying “oopsie” and then quietly going on with their lives safely away from the destruction that they’ve sown is not good enough. That Hans Landa shit doesn’t fly.

Every UBI study shows how successful the idea is, but it’s ultimately a bad system, because all it will ever be is another form of Capitalism. What makes UBI successful is that people no longer have to struggle (as much) to pay rent and feed themselves while pursuing more worthy endeavors. If you read between the lines of every UBI success story, you find that money is just a middle man, an unnecessary toll booth between people and progress.

The real solution here is to guarantee a standard of living to people that includes housing, food, education and healthcare, without involving the exchange of money at all, because as long as these things are commodified, Capitalism will always find a way to provide as little of them as possible while charging as much as possible for them.

I don’t really celebrate holidays. But it’s Sunday, and I usually get together with some family and friends for dinner on Sunday, so we are doing that. Nothing big, just a basic cookout.

“Psyop” is the wrong term, but there is some truth to what they are saying.

During the post-WWII economic boom, the US government was rapidly expanding the highway system, making suburban land cheap and accessible. Developers like Levitt & Sons started mass producing suburban tract homes, and banks favored financing them over multi-unit buildings, due to the GI bill and FHA loans. This is when the “nuclear family” ideal was developed, which was defined as a single generation of husband and wife + minor children living in a single-family home. It was a marketing ploy to sell more houses, more appliances and furniture, more cars, etc. All of this led to more isolation, which in turn led to more consumption.

As George Carlin once put it, “you don’t need a formal conspiracy when interests converge.” That’s the case here. This was just Capitalism doing what Capitalism does, which is sell more shit to more people.

I grew up loving The X-Files, so conspiracy stuff was always interesting to me. I never bought into any of it, but it used to be fun.

I blame reality TV for our current state. They took what was probably one of the best tropes in sci-fi, started talking about it in documentary form, and a whole generation of brainless fucking idiots took it way too seriously, ruining it for the rest of us. Shows like Ancient Aliens took the whole “just asking questions” tactic to insane levels, and it bled over into politics and social issues, providing cover for people to “question” if wildfires may have been started by Jewish space lasers. It’s so infuriating.
